The Remnants Of A Wonderful Friendship

A keychain, two model elephants from her childhood and a handful of photos she gave me are all that remain of our time together. A fleeting relationship though it was, it was a connection I have seldom felt. What started as shared love for filmmaking, quickly progressed to 3+ hour calls, every night whilst she was visiting her family in Spain. I’ve never been one for FaceTime, but she managed to convince me and I’m incredibly glad that she did.

An invite from her to an art exhibition changed everything for me. Seeing her so happy in the moment, appreciating everything around her and becoming so inspired to create. I witnessed her completely open up and shed tears as she let me in. I lost myself in her. We shared moments that I’ll cherish for the rest of my days.

Unfortunately this brief connection became complicated when the feelings crept in and we shared a kiss; a kiss that would go on to cost more than I could have possibly imagined. Whilst our difference in age was significant to an unforgiving society, that is more judgemental than curious; we were just two adults trying to do our best to survive in a world that had to this point, been fairly cruel. Alas, as in many cases, people made their misguided opinions heard and just like that, it was over; blocked, deleted, done.

I will always respect her decision and wish nothing but the very best for her and her life; if anyone deserves a break, it’s her. I hope to one day see the impact her art makes on the world.

I wish I could’ve said goodbye. I miss my friend.
